STOCK MARKET

ADDINGTON SALE. (By Telegraph—Press Association ) CHRISTCHURCH, April 12. At Addington today the store sheep sale was lifeless, and sales were made with difficulty. On the average, values were easier for old local sheep and crossbreds. Numerous pens failed to find buyers and passings were heavier than usual; this applied also to Rom-ney-cross lines. Medium halfbred twotooths sold at 10s lOd to 14s 3d, and better four-year-olds at 9s; but a big number of- aged sorts sold round about the 2s mark. The entry of fat lambs was 1700. An erratic sale resulted, though, on the whole, values were practically on a par with those ruling last week. Exporters were active and for some classes were paying up to jd more than the schedule price, which remained unchanged at 7d for 361 b. and under. Butchers were again faced with a moderate shortage of good-quality lamb, and here, too, export rates were exceeded by a good -jd for light prime sorts. The fat sheep entered numbered about 5000, or 500 more than a week ago. The quality was better than for some time. The sale opened spiritedly and during the earlier stages ewes and wethers were firmer than a week ago, though later secondary sorts receded to about last week’s values. Best wethers sold better than for some time. Extra prime heavy wethers made to 30s 4d; prime heavy, 23s to 25s 6d; prime medium, 20s to 22s 6d; light, to 15s; extra prime heavy ewes, to 21s Id; prime heavy. 16s to 19s Gd; prime medium, 12s to 15s 6d; light, to Bs. The fat cattle sale opened spiritedly and showed no slackening as it proceeded. Good steers and heifers were dearer than a week ago by 10s to 20s a head, and there were instances of 18months sorts selling at about 40s a 100 lb. Average to good cattle sold at 36s to 38s a 1001 b., and there was an unsatisfied demand for them. Extra prime heavy steers made to £l7 7s 6d; prime heavy, £l4 15s to £l5 15s; prime medium, £l3 to £l4 10s; light, to £9 10s; extra prime heifers, to £l3- 17s Gd; prime, £9 15s to £lO 15s; medium, £7 to £9; light, to £G 10s; extra prime cows, to £lO 17s Gd; prime, £7 15s to £9; medium, £5 15s to £7; light, to £5 10s. The entry at the start of the porker sale was fairly short and prices showed a slight advance on those of last week. As the entry increased, however, prices receded slowly, but retained last week’s parity. Choppers were forward in medium numbers, and prices were slightly easier. There was a small entry in the bacon section and all sorts met with a good sale. Choppers made 48s Gd to £5; porkers, 40s Gd to 58s Gd; an average price a lb. of Gi;d to 7Jd; baconers, 59s Gd to £4 7s Gd; an average price a lb. of Gd to G.yd.
