REFUGEE STUDENTS
PROHOSED NEW ZEALAND ACTION. FUNDS TO BE RAISED. (By Telegraph—Press Association • DUNEDIN, April 12. Concrete measures for the relief of refugee students were disclosed by Mr J B. Aimers, newly-elected president of the New Zealand University Students’ Association, in an interview today. It has been decided that money will not be sent for relief purposes overseas, but that funds are to be organised for the maintenance of one suitable refugee student at each of the four university colleges. To raise funds for the proposal, an appeal is to be made by sub-committee of the association in each of the four university centres and efforts are to be made to obtain from college authorities exemption or substantial reductions in both fees and boards for five years for selected students. An allowance for living expenses is to be set aside from the fund. Selection of adaptable refugees is to be entrusted to several New Zealand graduated resident in London. Though Victoria University College is at present the only college which is prepared to guarantee a student, it is expected that appeals in other centres should meet with favourable response.
