THE HUMBLE LEMON
AN AID TO BEAUTY. The humble lemon can be pressed into service as an aid for many unexpected beauty problems. Lemons can be used at odd moments, and are indispensable for innumerable purposes. They are the basis of many expensive creams and lotions, and apart from external use, lemons abound with medicinal qualities which are excellent for internal upsets. External treatments are many, and here are three simple face-packs which will give excellent results. Egg and lemon packs are excellent for smoothing and softening the skin and for keeping it many shades whiter than it naturally is. First separate the yolk from the white of an egg, and beat the white to a stiff froth, gradually adding the juice of a small lemon. Then apply the mixture to your face, neck, and forehead, patting it very gently into the skin. Allow it to remain on for 20 minutes, and then gently remove with luke-warm water, Anally rinsing with ice cold water and drying with a soft towel. The above pack should not be used more often than once a week. Honey and lemon packs • are very beautifying, and should be kept for special occasions and applied before dressing for dances or parties. Mix in a saucer two dessertspoonfuls of lemon juice and a dessertspoonful of honey. When mixed, dab all over the face and neck, working in just a little with the fingers. Allow to remain on for 20 minutes and then sponge from the skin with cold water. This pack will leave your skin in a delightfully smooth condition, and your make-up will have a velvety appearance for the rest of the evening. Fuller’s earth and lemon-juice packs are excellent for removing blemishes and tightening the skin. Add the juice of one lemon to two tablespoonfuls of fuller’s earth, and mix thoroughly together until you have a stiff paste. Then smooth —do not rub —the paste thoroughly over the face and under the chin. Allow the paste to harden and leave on for 10 minutes. Remove from the face with warm water, finishing off with plenty of cold. Lemons and Honey. Dietitians tell us.that lemons contain quantities of vitamin C, and that if we desire good health our system must absorb this vitamin. And in what more pleasant manner can this be accomplished than by means of lemon drinks. They are cooling to the blood, they help the kidneys throw poisons from the body, they have a most excellent action on the liver, and they will keep our skin free from minor blemishes. If the lemon drink is a trifle sour, do not add sugar for sweetening purposes, as some doctors have the belief that this helps to destroy some of the benefit, which it is desired to obtain. A better sweetening method is by the addition of one or two teaspoonfuls of honey. First place the honey in a glass and dissolve it with a little warm water, then add the juice of one or two lemons, fill the glass with water, and sip slowly. If this lemon drink is taken each morning it . will be found to be most energising and skin-clearing. And, despite the popular belief that lemons thin the blood, doctors state that this is not the case, and that nothing but good can ensue from the daily lemon drink.
