IN TOWNSHIP OF MANUREWA.
DAMAGE ESTIMATED AT £12.000. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND. April 9. While 10 persons slept in ignorance of their peril, a fire which quickly assumed uncontrollable proportions started in a boarding-house in the centre of the township of Manurewa shortly after 3 o’clock on Saturday morning. For two hours it raged fiercely and completely destroyed the boardinghouse, the Manurewa theatre next door, and three shops. Little was savec from the blaze, boarders escaping m scanty attire and losing, all their personal effects, but no one was injured. The total damage was estimated at about £12.000.
The roof and hollow brick wall of the theatre nearest the boarding-house collapsed, leaving only two other bare walls and the front of the building.
Two shops situated in front of the theatre were also gutted. A room leased by the Manurewa Masonic Lodge was also destroyed with it a quantity of lodge paraphernalia. Two buildings were also badly scorched by the intense heat.
Though the cause of the fire is a mystery, it is believed to have started in the washhouse of the boardinghouse. There had been no fire under the copper for some days.
