TOURNEY AT DUNEDIN. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, April 9. The thirty-fifth annual New Zealand inter-university college tournament which is being held in Dunedin till Tuesday began yesterday, when lawn tennis, swimming, rowing and athletic competitions were held. The preliminaries of the lawn tennis and swimming were held in the morning at Logan Park and the Municipal Baths respectively, the finals of the swimming being decided in the evening. The rowing eights, won by Otago by three feet from Canterbury, with Victoria third and Auckland fourth, was decided over a course from Macandrew Bay to Victoria Wharf in the morning. In the afternoon the athletic championship, probably the most important contest of the series, were begun at the university oval. Two track and four field events for the athletic shield were decided and a number of preliminaries run off. The outstanding race of the afternoon was the mile, in which B. W. Nixon (0.U.) fought out a great finish with K. W. Robinson (C.U.C.) to win by a yard. The furlong title went to C. V. Adams (V.U.C.), who had a stronger finish than H. A. Steele (0.U.). J. L. Adams registered an outstanding performance in the discus throw. He improved upon his own record by more than 15 feet in a special throw. R. G. Pilling (0.U.) scored a decisive win in the broad jump and J. L. Vosailagi (0.U.) created a mild surprise by winning the pole vault.

J. G. Cutler (A.U.C.) easily retained the hammer throw title. In the final of the 50 yards women’s free style, Miss J. Morice, of Masterton, was third, and in the 100 yards womens free style, she was first, winning by a yard in 78 2-ssec.
