EMERGENCY PLANS
EVACUATION OF CHILDREN FROM LONDON INSTRUCTIONS ISSUED TO ALL SCHOOLS. FOOD AND LABOUR ISSUES. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY. April 6. ’ Plans, complete almost to the last detail, for the evacuation of school children from the metropolis in the event of an emergency were issued by the London County Council last night to the heads of all schools in London. In an answer in the House of Commons yesterday, Mr Chamberlain said that he was making arrangements whereby the responsibility for a Food Defence Plans Department would be taken over by Mr W. S. Morrison, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. The General Council'of the Trades Union Congress held a special meeting yesterday to consider various problems arising from the control of labour in time of war. It is reported that after a general discussion it was decided to refer the whole question to a committee for detailed examination. The General Council, it is understood, proposes to consult affiliated unions before forwarding specific proposals to the Minister of Labour. In the House of Commons yesterday the Parliamentay Secretary to the Admiralty, Mr Geoffrey Shakespeare, said he anticipated that 1000 merchant ships would be stiffened and prepared for gun-mountings by the end of the year. Sufficient anti-submarine guns and ammunition, he said, were ready for all requirements, and the provision of anti-aircraft guns was progressing.
