USE OF FERTILISERS

HUGE ANNNUAL WORLD TOTAL. According to figures submitted to the world Fertiliser Congress held in Rome last year, the world consumption of commercial fertilisers reached the astonishing figure of 41,929,500 tons in 1936, and contained 8,561,750 tons of pure plant food. Of the total tonnage consumed the proportions of the different plant foods were nitrogen, 25.86 per cent; phosphoric acid, 47.34 per cent; and potash, 26.80 per cent. Illustrating the important position which commercial fertilisers have won during the comparatively short period since they have come into popular use, fertilisers now rank ninth among the world’s principal commodities considered from the point of view of total tonnage.
