WAR OR PEACE?
Herr Hitler Must Now Choose SPEECH REGARDED AS TURNING POINT (Independent Cable Service.) (Received This Day, 10.10 a.m.) LONDON, March 31. It is semi-officially stated that Whitehall declares that Mr Chamberlain’s statement makes is clear that Britain and France will defend Poland if Poland defends herself, also that if Poland fights over Danzig, England and France will fight also. However, it does not rule out the possibility of German-Polish negotiations over Danzig. The city regards the speech as a turning point. The majority of opinion is that Herr Hitler must now choose between war and peace and that the period of dictators facing the world with a series of faits accomplice is ending. It is learned in official circles at Whitehall that the Premier’s statement was made in view of the German incursion in Bohemia and Moravia and that it was no longer possible to take the slightest risk. A suggestion that the statement was made as the result of some information that Germany was contemplating sensational steps is without foundation.
Political circles note that the assurance to Poland is not balanced by any obligation on her side, except those which she may already be under because of her alliance with France.
It is thought extremely probable that Rumania will shortly line up with the peace bloc.
