HOUSING SHORTAGE
PROBLEM FACING GOVERNMENT.
SKILLED TRADESMEN WANTED.
According to Mr J. Robertson. M.P.. who ■ spoke in the Municipal Social Hall, Masterton, last night, the housing shortage is one of the 'greatest and the most difficult problems facing the Government. Up to the end of January, he said, applications for State houses totalled ’ 14,993.
The present- rate of finished State houses was 57. a week, and that was not half enough. Using the labour available at present it was estimated that they could provide 3500 houses a year, but 5000 were needed to meet normal requirements. There was a mrrific slack to be taken up. The shortage of skilled tradesmen consequent upon the wrecking of the Apprenticeship Act by the past Government was a big factor. By the end of another twelve months, however, he believed they would have found a way to provide not only 5000 but 8000 houses a year. At present 2700 tradesmen were wanted to carry on the Government’s housing policy.
