FORERUNNER OF STAR SYSTEM
TRAGEDY AT HOLLYWOOD.
Another tragedy has been added to Hollywood history by the suicide of Florence Lawrence. •
Only the earliest filmgoers probably even remember her name. But she was an important figure in the cinema. For she was the very first star, the forerunner of the whole star system as wc know it. Florence Lawrence came into films in 1907. Stars were anonymous in those days and she became popular as “The Biograph Girl.” Then Carl Laemmle persuaded her to leave the Biograph company and work for him. He could not use her old name so he took the unprecedented step of publicising her by hpr "wii name. SJl‘ was soon followed oy iviary Pickford, and so stars were born.
Up to the time of her death, Florence Lawrence was one of the oldtimers “on pension” at the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studios. She got a small weekly salary and occasionally appeared among the crowd.
