GARDEN CIRCLE

BEAUTIFUL DISPLAY YESTERDAY IN Y.M.C.A. HALL. OPENING BY THE MAYOR. Many beautiful blooms of excellent quality and decorative work of an artistic nature were in evidence at the autumn flower show of the Garden Circle of the Townswomen’s Guild, which was held in the Y.M.C.A. Hall yesterday. The display reflected great credit on those responsible. Mrs F. Shortland, leader of the circle, introduced the Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, who declared the show open. Mr Jordan congratulated the circle on its splendid display and emphasised the fact that it was a non-competitive exhibition, in which the members of the circle co-operated to make a show worthy of the circle’s activities. Mr Jordan added that he hated to think that so many beautiful flowers had been grown out of the borough water supply. Mrs Shortland was presented with a posy by Pamela Shearer and Mr Jordan received a buttonhole. A feature of the afternoon was the arrival of a bridal party, arranged with a view to displaying the bouquets, which were made by a member of the circle. Mrs Eric Jones was the bride, Miss Pither the bridegroom, Mrs Duckworth matron of honour, Miss Wells the bridesmaid and Margaret Thompson the flower girl. Mrs H. Speight contributed two solos. A bring, and buy stall was in charge of Mrs H. Thompson and the tea rooms were under the direction of Mrs Lyttle.
