JEWISH REFUGEES
WELCOMED BY TOWNSPEOPLE OF CHELLES.
France, the first country in Europe to grant complete civil rights to the Jews, at the time of the French Revolution, has offered hospitality to a large number of refugees. At Chelles, close to Paris, the refugees have proved a good investment, and the townspeople have signed a petition calling on the authorities not to remove the colony to the south. Among the refugees were a number of specialists in the manufacture of woollen wear, and their activities brought prosperity to local tradespeople.
