CARTERTON
DIXON STREET IMPROVEMENT. TAR SEALING OPERATIONS. (“TJmes-Age” Special.) It was reported at last night’s meeting of-the Borough Council that the sealing of Dixon street would be done next week and when completed this street would be the best in Carterton. Tyne Street is also tq be finished before the winter sets in. Footbal Club. Carterton footballers of all grades held a vbry good practice last evening in view of games to be played at Easter. By appearances Carterton will have very strong teams this year. Ladies’ Hockey Club. Already the Carterton Ladies Club have commenced practice in real earnest for the hockey season, which will shortly be in full swing. Mr C. Holland will coach the local club. Gas Works Plant. A start Was made this morning with the installation of the new gas exhauster -at the Carterton works, and the plant should be in excellent working order in a week’s time. Personal. Mr R. Morris has left on a holiday to be spent in the Hawke’s Bay District. Mr Phil Wright who has been in Auckland and North Auckland for a long time past, is staying with his mother at Clareville. He has. accepted a ppsition in Hawke’s Bay. SWIMMING. SORENSON CUP WON BY GARDINER. The third and final race for the Sorenson Cup brought about by the fact that Messrs A. Pinfold and Gardiner had tied over the two distances was decided last night. The final event was over 300 yards, and after a good race Gardiner won comfortably. He conceded Pinfold 6secs. The time .for the race was 4min 26secs. ~ At a meeting of the club held after the' race it was decided to hold a social evening on April 19, when trophies won during the season will be presented. Free Library. When replying to correspondence asking for information as to the effect the free library system had at Featherston and Pahiatua, Featherston’s answer'Was that borough members had increased 100 per cent, and the country 25 per cent. Pahiatua although giving no figures, reported that a much better system Was operating. balefield Football Club. A meeting of the Dalefield football club was held last evening when matter relating to the welfare of the club were considered. After considerable discussion it was decided to meet again on Tuesday, when an effort will be made to enter a third grade team for the Rugby Union’s competition. Safety Lines. When the question of safety pedestrian crossings was being discussed at last night’s meeting of the Borough Council, it was stated that it would be futile to lay the same down at the southern end schools, as it is understood the southern buildings would be closed shortly. Additions to the Holloway Street School were in course of preparation, so that all children would be under the one roof. Church Service. Church of England service, will be held at Ponatahi on Sunday next at 2 p.m. ______
