Madrid has surrendered and according to Reuter’s Madrid correspondent the formal occupation of the city will commence at 5p m. A despatch from the British United Press Madrid representative states that Nationalist and Republican troops fraternised before the surrender, exchanging cigarettes, rations and newspapers. The Nationalists announce that fifty lorryloads of food are being distributed in Madrid in the afternoon. Thousands of Republicans left for Valencia during the night, including municipal employees. General Franco is continuing his offensive on the Toledo and Cordoba fronts until he ascertains whether the surrender’ involves the ten Republican provinces.
