“I HATE MAGPIES”

BIRDS CONDEMNED AS KILLERS. SUGGESTED DESTRUCTION. “I hate the magpies,” declared Mr A. Seed, chairman of the Fishing Committee of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society, at a meeting of the North Wairarapa Society in Master ton last night. “I have seen them destroy fantails in my own garden,” he added.

Mr O. Jensen said that magpies were vicious birds, were killers and the country would be well rid of them. He had shot two of the birds once after they had seriously injured a fowl. Dr. G. F. V. Anson, chairman of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society, said that the Minister of Internal Affairs was sympathetic towards the desthe birds but he was looking for a lead from the farmers. The New Zealand Bird Protection Society condemned the magpie.

Mr Seed said that the only way they would get legislative action would be by the Farmers’ Union taking action in the various districts. If the farmers favoured the destruction of the birds he thought the Minister would then take action. Dr. Anson said that any move by the society might be regarded with suspicion by the farmers.
