RUGBY FOOTBALL
PRIMARY SCHOOLS UNION. ANNUAL REPORT. The following is the annual report of the Wairarapa Primary Schools’ Rugby ’Union for 1938: —We wish to report that the season was a very successful one from many points of view. During the year Messrs G. L. Thorby and J. W. Duffin received promotion to other districts. We wish them every success in their new spheres and take this opportunity of welcoming Messrs B. H. Clift, J. L. Tamblyn and J. E. Bishop. Although the Senior Championship was much depleted owing to lack of larger boys ffie final was one of the best ever played under our Union. Greytown won a hard tussle by a forcedown after twenty-five minutes extra play against Central and we offer our congratulations to Mr Whimp and his team on their well merited success. In the Northern area a start was made with a midget competition which proved very interesting and successful. Our Representatives at the Annual Quadrangular Tournament performed very well, being runners-up to Wanganui in a very even contest. This puts Wanganui one up in total wins over Wairarapa. Our thanks are due to the Manawatu Schools’ Union for the excellent hospitality they extended to our boys and Managers (Messrs L. D. Keedwell and J. A. Kennedy). At the meeting of delegates it was resolved to run the competition in future under a limit of 8 stone 7 pounds instead of 9.7.
The Sixth Annual Seven-a-side Tournament held in Masterton-was a great success. We were once again favoured with excellent weather and 29 teams took part. The finals resulted: SeniorCentral beat Greytown 5—3. Junior--Carterton. A beat Martinborough 6 —o. Third—Martinborough beat Central A 6—l. We wish to thank all those who worked so hard to make the Tournament a success.
We picked up a little in our financial position, reducing the debit from £3 9s lOd to £1 7s lOd. As the Annual Tournament is to be held in Masterton this year we will need to make a big effort in this direction. We wish to extend our sincere thanks to the Wairarapa Rugby Union for their continued interest in and connection with our game by assisting us financially and in other ways; to the Press for their thorough and practical support: to the Red Star Club for financial assistance and to all others who helped in various ways to keep alive the grand old game among our boys. In conclusion may we trust that ah' those who are interested in Rugby wil’ assist us in August by attending garner and opening their homes to billet visiting boys so that Masterton will no' be outdone by the hospitality our boy; have received in the other centres.
The report is signed on behalf o’ the Schools’ Union by the Presiden' (Mr E. G. Coddington) and the honorary' secretary (Mr J. A. Kennedy).
