CARTERTON

ORDER OF DRUIDS. MEETING OF TOTARA LODGE. ("Times-Age” Special.) The fortnightly meeting of Totara Lodge of Druids was held last evening. There was a large' attendance over which Sister Brazendale, A.D., presided. Accounts passed for payment were: —Sick page, £l9 6s 8d; lodge surgeons £75 ss; hospital, £23 16s; general £1 10s total expenditure, £ll9 7s Bd. For attention given to Bro J. McKenzie while in Rotorua under treatment, it was resolved that a letter of thanks be sent to the Rotorua Lodge of Druids. It was stated that Bro A. Jensen, had been temporarily discharged from Masterton Hospital, but would return again in a week. Bro Ben Archer is progressing favourably in hospital. Bro H. J. Bassett,, an inmate of Greytown Hospital, is making good progress after an operation for appendicitis. Secretary Bro E. McKenzie reported on the. business transacted at the Grand Lodge meeting held at New Plymouth, and was accorded a vote of thanks. ■ The secretary was authorised to arrange matters in connection with the complimentary party and supper to be tendered to the lady members of the Lodge Social Committee. The date of the annual ball was fixed for May 15, in the King’s Theatre. Udy’s orchestra is to be engaged to supply the music. Although next lodge night falls on Easter Monday it was decided to meet as usual. Personal. \ Messrs W. A. Kempton and C. Groube have left Car ter ton on a tour of the North Island. They will visit Rotorua,' Waihi, Auckland and other towns north, and will visit Palmerston North and Otaki before returninghome.

SWIMMING. SORENSEN CUP CONTEST. Tonight at the Carterton Municipal Baths the final event for the Sorenson Cup, 300 yards will be decided between Messrs A. Pinfold and F. Gardiner. The race should be a good sne. Pinfold is the present holder of the cup. BOWLING. GRADY MEDALS RETAINED. Two ■ Carterton bowlers, Messrs BoVne and Barber (s) journeyed to Greytown last evening in quest of the Grady Medals. After a very good game the. holders,. Messrs R. G. Vile and Higgison (s) retained the trophies by 19/12. Military Activity. A Carterton visitor to Auckland recently in conversation with the “TimesAge” representative stated that he was astonished at the activity that exists in the Auckland- district, at the present time in military matters. He had not seen since the Great War so much activity as was at present prevalent, in the military camps in the Auckland district.

Bible Society.

A pleasant afternoon was spent in the Presbyterian Church Hall, Carterton, when the annual meeting of the British and Foreign Bible Society was held. The chair was taken by the Rev Ralph Byers, President of the Carterton Branch for the past year, and the election of officers resulted as follows: President, Rev H. White; vice-presi-dent, Revs W. F. Stent and Ralph Byers; hon secretary, Miss Marion Every; committee, Mesdames Stent, White, Byers, Every, Peters, Udy and Tyler. The speaker for the afternoon was Mrs Violet Wakelin, Organising Secretary of the Wellington Province, and she gave a practical outline of the activities of the Society, specially mentioning the work of the colporteurs, those men who carry the Scriptures to the farthest corners of the earth. A vocal item was given by Mrs Worsfold, a beautiful rendering of “Bird Songs at Eventide,” and was much appreciated. Mrs Wakelin expressed the thanks of the Society to Mrs Byers, and also to the band of collectors, whose efforts made it possible for the good work to be carried on. Tea, served by the ladies, brought the afternoon to a happy conclusion. 'S The annual collection for the funds will commence shortly, and it is hoped that Carterton residents will contribute with even more than usual generosity. ______
