“SPIRITUAL VITAMINS”

WHAT ARE THE CHURCHES?

“What are the churches? In the widest sense the churches are the groups within a nation that are conscious of spiritual values and objectives and who discipline their actions with a view to realising those values in the actual lives of men,” says the “Inquirer.” “They are the groups which reflect the spiritual aspect of the nation’s life and which strive to organise that aspect as a guiding principle for social-endeavour. It is hardly possible that, in a world wherein material power has outrun the wisdom of man to control it, such groups should be large. They may, indeed, be so small as to be apparently negligible elements in the mass-consciousness of the people as a whole. But are they really unimportant? The present year will determine the issue. It is reasonable to expect that if we can get through it peacefully the general course' of international affairs will clarify. We in the churches have our own work to do in keeping clear the moral principles involved and in supplying the spiritual vitamins that alone can purify the system of the body politic.”
