CARTERTON
RACING CLUB. MEETING OF STEWARDS. ("Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the stewards of the Carterton Racing Club was held in the P. and A. Society’s board room last night. There were present Messrs W. Howard Booth, president, in the chair, L, H. Smart, E. J. Matson, D. A. Abbott, R. G. Kemble, J. C. Harp, P. A. Cole and the secretary, Mr J. B. Bairstow. Apologies for absence kwere received from Messrs G. A. Vincent, P. Bain, C. Jensen, C. Reid and . VZ. C, .Deller. The ‘ secretary of the New Zealand Racing Conference wrote notifying that the conference would be held in Wellington. It was decided that the club be represented by Messrs J. W. Card and W. Howard Booth. The State Highways Board wrote in regard to the purchase of ground from the Racing Club to widen the roadway on the corner near the raccourse, stating that a cheque would be forwarded shortly. The question of the appointment of a trustee to replace one residing in Hawke’s Bay was left over till the annual meeting. It was resolved to apply to the Racing Conference for March 10, 1940, for the next race meeting of the club. The secretary of the Women’s Division and the Young Farmers’ Club wrote thanking the Racing Club for the use of the grounds for their recent annual picnic. The stipendiary steward forwarded a reference to the recent race meeting, complimenting the club upon the good conduct of the meeting. The secretary submitted a statement in respect of the race meeting just concluded which showed that although the weather conditions were against the club a very satisfactory financial result was the outcome. The treasurer reported that, the bank overdraft at the Bank of New Zealand was £365 15s. Accounts amounting to £65 4s 4d were passed for payment. One resignation was accepted and two new members were elected. > A very hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Mr A. D. Abbott for the good work he had done at the racecourse prior to the race meeting, and it was decided his services be recorded on the minutes. Mr Abbott suitably returned thanks.
Personal Items. Dr M. B. M. Tweed, who some years ago resided in Carterton, and who since has resided at Heretaunga, has
removed to Wellington. Mr W. S. King’s youngest son, who had been critically ill with pneumonia at his father’s home in Broadway, is now well on the road to recovery. Mr G. Gray, of Timaru, has taken over the supervision of Featherston and South Wairarapa Counties as Government Rabbit Inspector. Mr H. L. Wightman, of the Department of Agriculture for South Wairararapa and the Featherston County, has received notice of his appointment on promotion to the Dannevirke office. Mr Wightman will commence his new duties very shortly. Borough Council. The monthly meeting of the Carterton Borough Council will be held on Tuesday evening. ~ Plunket Shop Day. The executive of the Carterton. Plunket Society held a very successful shop day yesterday when £l5 . 3s was netted. ■ The Winner of the dinner was Mrs J. P.'Johnston and of the iced cake Mrs Norval. The thanks of the society are extended to the public for the support that was accorded the shop day.
