WAIRARAPA ASSOCIATION.

ANNUAL REPORT OF EXECUTIVE.

The annual report of the executive of the Wairarapa Basketball Association for the past year, which is signed by Misses 0. R. Sutherland (president) and R. K. Edwards (secretary) states:— The basketball season of 1938 opened with 18 teams, 8 A grade and 10 B grade, playing under the auspices of the Wairarapa Basketball Association.. All Saturday games were played on the Wairarapa College grounds which were available for hire through the courtesy of the headmaster, Mr G. G. Hancox. In the A, grade a high standard was reached while the B grade play improved as the season progressed. The season was most successful. A representative- team travelled to the N.Z. tournament held at Timaru on August 29. Bad weather prevailed throughout the- whole, tournament, girls having to play in hail and pouring rain in nearly every match. Although the team was unsuccessful all the players did themselves credit and on every occasion were defeated only by a narrow margin. Thanks are due to Miss A. J. Shelton, delegate. Miss R. K. Edwards, manager and captain, and to Miss Lorna Renner, vice-captain. The following girls were chosen to represent Wairarapa:. N. Cohen, E. Jones, J. Gemmell, P. Hanley, P. Kilmister, M. McLaren, R. Edwards (captain), L. Renner, A. Burgess, M. Carrol, B. Stitt. Misses B. Stitt and E. Jones were unable to travel so Misses P. ,Baskeville and E, Talbot were chosen to replace them. During the year the reps had the pleasure of travelling to Palmerston North to compete against Manawatu, and were billeted by the Manawatu Association. Also we had the pleasure of being hostess to the Bush representative team, and the B representatives were hosts to the Hutt Valley C team. The executive wish to thank all captains, club members and all others who willingly assisted in raising the necessary money for the representative team. This year Miss R. K. Edwards acted as coach and the executive wish to convey their thanks to players who so willingly opposed the representative team for -practice.

The result of the Queen Carnival was: lona £2O, H.S.O.G. £l3, College £8 9s Bd, Stars £6 11s 6d/ Carterton £3 2s 6d, Dalefield £5 ss, penny collections and special collectiqns, £4 Ils 4d; total, £5B 10s. Great difficulty was experienced in obtaining rep blazers and the incoming executive is asked to devise a plan. Thanks are extended to Mrs O’Donnell for donating a B grade cup, which is to be known as the O’Donnell Cup, and to an anonymous donor for a donation to the rep team expenses. During the year a badge was presented to Miss O. R. Sutherland, who was made a life member in 1937. A strong Wairarapa Referees’ Association was formed and two members were, successful in passing the official New Zealand referees’ - examination. An official Wairarapa referees’ badge is now obtainable.

We regret the departure from Masterton of Miss A. J. Shelton, a valuable member of the executive, and also Miss N. Cohen who has represented the Wairarapa for many years. The following were the results of representative games: —Rep A- team v Bush, won 23/16; Rep A team v. Manawatu, lost 17/18; rep B -team v Hutt Valley C, won 26/3. Opening tournament for regrading: A grade, Wairarapa College A team; runner-up, lona. A grade, Stars, runner-up, lona. B grade, Carterton, runner-up Dalefield. Closing handicap tournament: A grade, Iona; B grade, Carterton. Two general meetings were held during the year, (1) to discuss a referees’ association, (2) at the end of the season, to discuss various points during the season’s play, and at the latter a delightful supper was served, Miss O. R. Sutherland and Miss A. J. Shelton being the hostesses. During the year detailed reports of the matches were published by Miss O. Sutherland who was in charge of this branch. To her we extend our thanks; to the press for its courtesy in publishing results and reports throughout the year; to the Wairarapa Co-op. Association, Ltd., for window display, and to the principal of the Wairarapa College. We thank also all who gave their time to refereeing matches during the past season, thereby greatly assisting in the continuation of basketball in the Wairarapa.
