WAIRARAPA SOUTH COUNTY
MEETING OF COUNCIL.
CATTLE STOPS ON ROADS. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Wairarapa South County Council was held in the County Offices, Carterton, yesterday. There were present: Councillors D. McGregor (chairman), L. S Gallon, F. Court, A. E. Reid; W. E. Allen, C. A. Cameron, F. W. Joblin, A. McGregor, W. A. Renall. The treasurer’s statement showed a credit balance at the Bank of New Zealand as £3349. Receipts since the last meeting amounted to £2939 19s lid.
Accounts amounting to £4109 7s lb were passed for payment. It was resolved to divide the Te Wharau stock paddock into two paddocks and to place wire netting all round one.
It was decided to paint the Te Wharau men’s quarters before the winter sets in. .
In connection with . cattle stops on roads it was decided to suggest to the Department that they submit three or four specifications of standard designs as used by the Department before the installation of the same on certain roads.
It was decided to temporarily remove the Hecla chip crusher to the Gladstone site. Before framing the estimates for the coming year it was decided to go into the matter of re-shaping the road between Park Road and Oliver’s Corner. It was resolved that no parking of motor cars be allowed opposite the T( Wharau golf house and that the parking place he at Driscoll’s Road. This is to be a precaution against accidents with children at the golf links. . CARRINGTON WATER RACE. The Carrington water-race overseer reported for Marcn: —Owing to the long spell of dry weather, the river is nearly dry. There is not enough water to force its way under the top gate and 1 have had to open the gate some six inches so that the water can ' flow through the intake box. Up to now I have been able to keep a good supply in all the races, but if we do not have some rain soon, the farmers wil. have to be content with less water. A bad hole in the main race caused a shortage of water for a few Hours- In company with councillors and Mr Wallace, we paid >4 a visit to Mr Thorne s farm and it was decided to put in a I inch pipe when Mr Daysh finrsnes the drain. General cleaning has been carried out on Messrs Davis, Carder, Thorn, Parker, Jensen, Reid, Carter and Sage. COUNTY OVERSEER’S REPORT. The oounty overseer’s report for March stated:—-Belvedere Riding: The only work done in this riding has been grading in metal on Chester, Cobden, Mannings, Brooklyn- and Victoria roads. Rarkvale Riding: The only work done in this riding also has been grading in metal on Kokotau, Park, Somerset, Francis, East Taratahi and Cornwall rads. Dalefield Riding: The only work done in this riding also has been grading in metal on Moreton, Waihakeke, Swamp,.Waterson, Moffats, Josephs and Jervois roads. Maungaraki Riding: A pipe culvert has been put in and the fence set back on a corner on Miller’s road. Metal has been graded in on Ponatahi, Miller, Longbush, Te Kopi, Flat Point, Glenburn and Kaiwhata' roads. Metalling and general maintenance work has been done on Flat Point road. Watertables have been cleaned and general maintenance work done on Craigic Lea Road. Some widening has been done and water-tables cleared on the Wainuioru Valley Road. General: Metal has been graded in, water-tables cleared and general maintenance work done on the • East Coast Road. The Taueru Bridge has been tarred and sanded. The approach to the Backwater Bridge has been filled to give better visibility. The metal has been graded in on the Carterton-Gladstone Road. The sealing has been completed ori the Dalefield Road. The river protection work above the Kokotau Bridge will be completed next week. Seven days’ crushing for chips has been done during the month.
