MAGISTRATE’S COURT

GREYTOWN SITTING. POLICE BY-LAW CASES. (“Times-Age” Special.) Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M., presided at the monthly sitting of the Greytown Magistrate’s Court, held yesterday. “His excuse was that he was trying to save the battery,” observed Traffic Inspector Nicholsop when Sydney Field was fined 10s and 10s costs for having ridden a bicycle at night without a light. On a similar charge James Wilken was fined 15s and 12s costs.

J. T. McFadgen was charged with having driven a heavy motor vehicle over the Rimutaka Hill at a speed exceeding 25 miles an hour. It was stated that at times defendant’s speed reached 45 miles an hour, and that Constable A. Gregor experienced difficulty in passing him. McFadgen was fined £3 and 10s costs.

For having no radio licences the following were fined the amounts stated: —Ronald Marks, 5s and 10s costs; Ronald G. Green 5s and 12s costs; William Arthur, £1 and 10s costs; Ernest George Harrison, 5s and 10s costs; John William McHardy, 5s and 7s costs.

For having no warrant of fitness in respect of a motor-car, Leo Chung was fined £1 and 12s costs.

SITTING AT CARTERTON YESTERDAY. POLICE AND CIVIL BUSINESS. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly sitting of the Carterton Magistrate’s Court was held at Carterton yesterday, Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M., presiding. A fine of £3 and 10s costs was imposed on H. B, Davenport, on a charge of having attempted to cross the railway line at Clareville when the line was not clear. It was stated that the railway line went through private property, and that defendant and a boy were injured when they were struck by a north-bound train. For having failed to register dogs, K. M. Braggins and J. Lipinski were each fined 10s and £1 6s costs.

Judgment' for plaintiff by default was given in the following undefended civil claims: P. G. Mayger v J. Walker claim £2 7s 6d, costs 15s 6d; Duncan Bryce and Red Star Service Ltd v D. Udy, claim, £2 9s lOd, costs £1 7s 6d; Watson and Co v R. Jansson, claim £2 10s, costs £1 5s 6d; Watson and Co v E. Knott, claim, £1 19s' 9d, costs 10s; Hill and Hughes, Ltd. v E. James, claim £2 12s 6d, costs, £1 5s 6d; Hill and Hughes Ltd. v Rangi Namana, claim £2 4s 7d, costs £1 9s 6d. On a judgment summons’L. James was ordered to pay South Wairarapa Motors the sum of £1 4s forthwith in default two days imprisonment.
