FEATHERSTON

SCHOOL ASSOCIATION. EUCHRE TOURNAMENT. (“Times-Age” Special.) There were fourteen tables at the Home and School Association’s euchre tournament on Tuesday night. The winners were: —Ladies: Mrs Mellish, 1; Mrs McKenna, 2. Men: Mrs Watson (acting as a man), 1; Mr Rupt. Williams, 2. Kahutara-Pihautea Guild. Mrs Parker entertained a number of ladies at her home in Pukio on Tuesday afternoon, the gathering being in aid of the funds of the Kahutara-Pi-hautea Guild. Games and competitions were much enjoyed, the competition winners were: Mesdames Mclntosh, Pottinger. Juno, Pope, Knapp and Miss Hood. Afternoon tea was served and thanks expressed to Mrs Parker for the enjoyable time spent. Personal. Mrs C. J. Ashton, Lower Hutt, paid a brief visit to Featherston yesterday. Mr and Mrs Ashton will leave for England at the end of the month. School Committee. At the monthly meeting of the Featherston School Committee there were present Messrs J. W. Holland (chairman), C. C. Kenward, C. Buck. J. W. Henderson, S. Murphy, J. Higgison, C. J. Carlyon, W. Jeffrey and the headmaster, Mr F. Hayes. An apology for absence was received from Mr .F. A. O'Neale. The treasurer reported credit balance as £92 16s 7d, and accounts amounting to £55 15s 9d were submitted and passed for payment. The headmaster reported the number on the roll as 250 primary, and 72 secondary, 34 additional pupils had qualified for their swimming certificates.

As upwards of 100 children have their lunch at school and there were no conveniences for heating water, it was resolved to apply to the Education Department to supply suitable apparatus for this purpose, and also for a supply of malted milk to take the place of cocoa.

Permission was granted to the Methodist Yeung Women’s Bible Class to hold an Easter Camp in the school subject to the conditions laid down by the Education Board. ■ A letter was received from the Hon. P. Fraser, Minister of Education, stated that Cabinet had approved the grant for the extra school building accommodation. It was resolved that a letter of thanks be sent to the Minister, and that the. Education Department be written to asking when tenders for the building would be called.
