WATER SUPPLY

ALLEGATION AGAINST BOROUGH COUNCIL.

COMMENT IN MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

An allegation that the Borough Council had not done its duty by the community as regarded an adequate wgter supply was made by Mr H. H. Daniell in the Masterton Magistrate’s Court this morning when a large number of charges of breaches of the hosing regulations were heard.

Mr Daniell recalled that some 16 years ago a proposal to raise a loan for augmenting the water supply was turned down by the ratepayers. Since then the question of improving the supply had been allowed to go into the discard. Each year there was a crop of prosecutions and no steps were taken to meet the position by the Borough Council. It was not a question of finance as the borough now proposed to spend £20,000 on tepid swimming baths while leaving the town with only a 201 b water pressure for fire fighting purposes. The council was not doing its duty., Thd Magistrate, Mr' H. P. Lawry. S.M.: “You are much more fortunate in having 7 hours a day in which to use hoses than most other towns. In Palmerston North a fortnight ago we could not use our hoses or even pour water on the garden with a bucket. The fact that you have only a low water pressure for fire fighting makes it all the more reason why any undue wastage of water should be restricted."
