ORCHESTRAL SOCIETY

ANNUAL MEETING HELD LAST NIGHT. NEW CONDUCTOR WELCOMED. The annual meeting of the Masterton Orchestral Society was held last evening when the report of the past season’s activities (already published) was received w.ith very favourable comments and with the balance sheet, which showed the financial position to be sound, was adopted. The president, Mr A. E. Clemas, who presided, made feeling reference to the loss the society had sustained in the death of Mr Candy, who had been conductor for a good number of years, and through his ability and personality had carried the orchestra through most difficult times. Mr Clemas welcomed the new conductor, Mr C. W. Kerry and assured him of the same loyal support as had been given to Mr Candy. Mr Kerry thanked Mr Clemas for his kindly welcome and assured the meeting that he would do his utmost to further the interests and progress of the orchestra.

The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows: —President, Mr A. E. Clemas (re-elected): vice-presidents, Messrs R. J. Young, A. E. Prentice and D. A. Pickering (re- _ elected); committee. Mesdames Clemay. • and Bunny, Miss I. E. Dickens, an j Messrs C. W. Kerry, J. Grey, H. E. P_——■ ther and W. H. Snowsill; librarian, Mr J. Grey; hon. secretary and treasurer, Mr E. Bell (re-elected). In proposing the re-election of Mr Bell as hon. secretary, Mr Clemas spoke appreciatively of his services and a hearty vote of thanks, with the usual honorarium, was carried by acclamation. Business matters of a routine nature were discussed and a vote of thanks to the chair closed the meeting, after which a start was macle with orchestral practice.
