CARTERTON

' COMBINED PICNIC. FARMERS’ CLUB & WOMEN'S DIVISION. ("Times-Age” Special.) The annual picnic of the Young Farmers’ Club and the Women’s Divi- . sion was held on the Carterton Racecourse on Saturday and was very successful. There was a very large attendance and those present thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Considerable ex? citement was caused by the tug o’ war between a team of the Women’s Division and the Young Farmers’ Club. Attached to the event is a rose bowl jand last year the ladies were successful ih-'beating the men. On this occasion the men were backing themselves to win and were very confident and when both teams lined up the ladies were equally confident, of victory. It was a great tussle and at the finish the men lost by a narrow margin. The ladies will thus hold the rose bowl till the next annual picnic. Mrs Geo Morris, of Kent Street, Carterton, who has been recuperating at Paraparaumu after an illness has re- > turned to Carterton. . Word-was received early this morning by- Mrs M. O'Reilly of the death of her brother-in-law, Mr Guy Attwood, of Christchurch. The late Mr Attwood was a returned soldier, and was severely wounded • in the Great War. As the result of his war injuries he has been under treatment in the Christchurch hospital on many occasions. Deceased leaves a wife and one child. . ' ' , Mr J. B. Ritchie, well-known in Featherston, has been elected secretary of the Wellington Miniature Rifle Association. ODD FELLOWS’ LODGE. LOYAL HEART OF OAK MEETING. The fortnightly meeting of Loyal Heart of Oak Lodge of Odd Fellows, Manchester Unity, was held last evening. Bro A. R. Tankersley, N.G., presiding., One member was declared on tne lodge sick funds and one declared off the funds. Sick reports were received regarding two, brothers who are on the sick list. Both are progressing favourably. The District Grand Master, Bro G. A. Craddock, wrote thanking the lodge members for the letter of congratulation upon his attaining the Grand Mastership of Wellington District. P.G. Bro Jas F. Wallis wrote stating he would enter the sanitarium at Rotorua at the end of March for treatment for arthritis. Sick pay £6 13s 4d, other accounts including medical £69 4s lid, were passed for payment. A maternity claim for £6 was passed for payment. Miniature Rifles. Members and intending members are reminded of the annual general meetirwto be held in the supper room of the State Theatre on Wednesday night at 8 o’clock. Swimming. The 440yds swimming race for the L. H. Sorensen Cup will be decided at the Carterton Baths tonight. Bowling. A challenge has been received by the holders of the champion rink badges from a rink of Greytown bowlers. The game will be played on Thursday afternoon commencing at 4.30 o’clock. LABOUR PARTY. CARD TOURNAMENT. The weekly card tournament of the Labour Party was held in the band room on Saturday night. There was a large attendance, and the prizes were won as follows: Ladies, Mrs O’Keefe 1. Mrs K. Hodder 2. Men. Mr Thomas 1, Mr E. Phelps 2. * Supper was partaken of after cards and was supervised by the ladies’ committee of the Labour Party.
