ST LUKE’S GARDEN PARTY.
AN EXCELLENT RESULT. ("Times-Age” Special.) The Ladies’ Guild of St Luke's Church held a very successful Garden Party on Saturday afternoon in the beautiful grounds at the residence of Mr and Mrs F. C. Bunny. The various stalls were placed under the shade of the trees. Canon Sykes expressed his pleasure at seeing so many present and extended the thanks of the guild to Mr and Mrs Bunny for the use of their grounds. The Rev E. J. Rich, of Masterton, declared the Garden Party officially opened, and in his remarks paid a tribute to the great band of women who throughout the world are doing a great deal in helping to carry on the work of the Christian Church. The stall holders were: Produce, Mesdames Barcham and Stevens; cakes, Mesdames Burch and Rees: sweets, Mesdames Wiggins, Everett and Miss Wiggins; baby show, Mesdames Richards and Carter. The judge of the baby show was Mrs Bon Jury, the prizewinners being: Under 6 months, girls: Claire Ann Burns; boys, David Murray; 6 to 12 months, girls: Judith Alexanders; boys, lan Hodge; 1 year to 2 years: Mary Ann Peterson 1, Janice Anker 2; 2 to 3 years, boys: Barry Gold; girls: Helen Feast and Margaret Jensen 1. In the late afternoon dancing on the lawns was indulged in to the music of the piano-accordeon played by Master Alan Carter. There was a happy atmosphere around the various competitions, the winners being: Bowls, Mr Bloomfield; darts, A. D. Burch, Naildriving, C. Burch; quoits, B. Brice; croquet, Mesdames Pound and Richards. The entrance prize was won by Miss Oona Barnard. Mrs F. C. Bunny won the 3-tier cake, and Mr G. Fenwick the sucking pig. The games were -in charge of Mrs Carter, Misses Gray and Sykes, Messrs E. Graham, G. Robinson, F. C. Bunny and W. J. Knell. Afternoon tea was served to all in the delightful shade of the trees. The takings amounted io over £34. TENNIS. CIVIL SERVICE v METHODIST. The Greytown Civil Service and Methodist Tennis Clubs played a match on Saturday afternoon. The Civil Service won by 121 games to 81. The results were as follow, the Civil Service players being mentioned first:— Men’s singles: McCarthy = beat Reid 6-1, Strange lost to Carter 4-6; Tregrutha beat Brunton 6-1, McKenna lost to Greathead 4-6; Loader beat Morris 6-3; Maloney lost to Rees 5-6. Ladies’ singles: Mrs McCarty beat Miss Jury 6-1; Mrs McKenna beat Miss S. Keltie 6-5; Mrs Kilgour lost to Miss N. Keltie 1-6; Miss Booth beat Mrs Ross -6-1; Mrs Maloney lost to Mrs Nicholson 5-6. Combined doubles: Mr and Mrs McCarty beat Reid and Miss Keltie 6-1; Tregrutha and Mrs McKenna lost to Carter and Miss Gray 4-6; Strange and Mrs Booth beat Greathead and Mrs Ross 6-5; Maloney and Mrs Strange beat Rees and Mrs Nicholson 6-4; McKenna and Mrs Maloney beat Harkness and Miss S. Keltie 6-5.
Men’s doubles: McCarty and Loader beat Reid and Carter 6-2; Tregrutha and Strange beat Brunton and Greathead 6-1; McKenna and Maloney beat Rees and Harkness 6-0. Ladies’ doubles: Mesdames McCarty and McKenna beat Misses S. Keltie and Gray 6-5; Mesdames Kilgour and Maloney lost to Miss N. Keltie and Mrs Ross 2-6; Miss Booth and Mrs Strange beat Mrs Nicholson and Miss S. Keltie 6-2. A return match is to be played in a fortnight’s time. Personals. Mrs W. Knapp, of Seatoun, is spending a holiday with Mrs E. Richards, McMaster Street. Mr F. A. Ridgley is at present on a holiday visit to Eketahuna. Mr C. Rees, of Hawera, is a visitor to Greytown. Mr and Mrs L. Brooks, of Palmerston North, who have been on a visit to Greytown, have left to spend a few days in Masterton. Miss M. Maddison has returned to Greytown. Mr M. Greathead has returned to Greytown from Wellington. . Miss N. Haigh has returned to Greytown, after a holiday spent in Wellington. GIRL GUIDES. TENTH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATED. The members of the Greytown Girl Guide Company celebrated their 10th birthday by a picnic party at 'the Waiohine River on Saturday afternoon. After a swim in the river a tea party was held and the Boy Scout Troop were the guests of the Guides. DIGGERS’ SOCIAL. A MOST ENJOYABLE GATHERING. The seating at the Odd Fellows’ Hall was far from sufficient to accommodate those who attended the Greytown Diggers second annual social, which was held on Friday evening. The first part of the programme took the form of a community sing of old time war favourites. Mr E. Graham led the singing and Mrs Graham played the accompaniment. A balloon race for sons and daughters of the diggers .caused great fun. The winners Miss P. Ollivor and Miss B. Hutchings and Peter Olliver and Ron Hutchings. Messrs H. and C. Graham were heartily applauded for their humourous items. Master Douglas Robinson sang two delightful solos. Mrs W. McMinn, of Masterton, gave much pleasure with two songs.
After supper dancing was indulged in by both young and old, the Lambeth' Walk being the most popular dance. A pleasing feature of these parties is to see Father and daughter and Mother
and son dancing together. The music for the dances was supplied by Mrs H. G. Carter (piano) and Master Alan Carter (piano-aecordeon). VISIT OF AUSTRALIANS. GREYTOWN EFFORT. At the diggers’ party at Greytown on Friday evening the opportunity was taken to explain to the members of the Greytown branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association that it was the present intention of the Wairarapa Association to invite 500 Australians to visit the district. The question of raising the Greytown money quota was fully discussed and, on the motion of Miss Higginson, it was decided to hold a Paddy’s Market next month. The various committees were appointed and all present expressed their willingness to help.
