CARTERTON
RUBBISH FIRE SPREADS. ("Times-Age” Special.) The Fire Brigade was summoned to a rubbish fire at the rear of Messrs Knutson and Jamieson’s factory yesterday afternoon. Fanned by the breeze the flames spread through the dry grass to paddocks adjoining, very nearly reaching a residence in Broadway. A serious fire was averted by willing workers with sacks and fire beaters supplied by the brigade and the use of one lead of hose by the Fire Brigade, who were quickly on the scene when summoned by the siren. Personal. Mr E. McKenzie, of Carterton, who represented Totara Lodge of Druids at the conference held in New Plymouth, returned home yesterday. Constable and Mrs Sid Hercock, who have been on a visit to Carterton, returned to Levin today. Mrs Lance Moore, of Melbourne, is the guest of Mr and Mrs D. L. Tavener, Park Road. Mr and Mrs W. Gregor, Wakelin Street, left by car for Auckland yesterday. They were accompanied by Mr Gregor’s sister, Miss E. Gregor, of Aberdeen, who has been visiting New Zealand for the past twelve months. Miss Gregor will sail by the Niagara for Scotland, on Tuesday. Wellington Races. A large number of local “sports” were present at the Wellington Races yesterday and made the trip again this morning. Euchre Party and Dance. The fortnightly card tournament and dance in connection with the Clareyille Hall Committe was held last night. There was a very .large attendance. The prizes for euchre were won byMrs Taplin (first) and Mrs Olliver (second). The men’s prizes went to Mr L. Humphries (first) and Mr Goodin (Second). The consolation awards were gained by Mrs Spackman and Mr Goodin. The Monte Carlo competition was won by Miss B. James and partner. Mr J. Morgan rendered a song during the evening. Mr Jas Edwards supplied the music and the M.’sC. were Messrs E. James and S. Fisher.
