OBITUARY
COLONEL GEORGE MITCHELL. NOTABLE MILITARY & CIVIL CAREER. s ♦ (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The death occurred in a private hospital last night of Colonel George Mitchell, D. 5.0., aged 62, manager of the Wellington Show Association. Born at Balclutha, he served in the South African War, going with the First Contingent. On his return he remained with the Clutha Mounted Rifles till 1908, when he was transferred to the Otago Mounted Rifles and subsequently to the Southland Regiment, in which he rose to the rank of major, when he left for service abroad in October, 1914, with that rank, in the Second Reinforcements. He was twice wounded at the Dardanelles. In 1916 he was in the reserve group at Sling Camp and during part of 1917 commanded the base depot at Etaples, with the rank of Lieut.-Colonel. On his return to New Zealand he again linked himself with the Southland Regiment, with the rank of major, and was placed on the retired list in October, 1927. He had taken up his residence in Wellington after his return from the Great War and won the Wellington South seat in Parliament in 1919, but was defeated by the present member, Mr R. McKeen, in 1922. For some years Colonel Mitchell was a member of the Wellington City Council and Harbour Board, of which latter body he was chairman for two years. He was a former chairman of the Board of Governors of the Wellington Colleges and was closely connected with the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, being a member of the Dominion Executive. He was a member of practically all organisations connected with the well-being of returned men, both in the Great War and the South African War. The interment is to take place tomorrow morning. MR. J. A. MUNRO. The death occurred at the Masterton Hospital last evening of Mr John Alexander Munro, of 95 Albert Street, Masterton, after a lengthy illness. The late Mr Munro had been an invalid for the past 12 years. Mr Munro came to the Wairarapa 50 years ago. having been born in Christchurch. He was employed for 14 years at ‘'The Peaks,” Tinui and had also worked at other places in the Tinui district. For the past 12 years he had resided in Masterton. He was twice married and is survived by a widow and a grown-up family.
The funeral will take place tomorrow and will leave the chapel of Hyde’s Funeral Services at 3 p.m. for the Masterton Cemetery.
