VALUE OF RESEARCH
GREAT SAVING TO INDUSTRY.
The prominent English publicist, Commander Stephen King-Hall, in one of his most recent "News-Letters,” makes a plea for the allocation of larger annual sums for research purposes in Great Britain. In that country £963,804 is spent a year on industrial research, about £700,000 on agricultural research, and £227.000 on medical research. These sums, he maintains, are inadequate.
“Research is an investment, and it has been estimated that £400,000 spent by six research associations have saved various industries a total of £3,000,000 a year. For example, in 1910 41 million tons of coal produced 2500 million units of electricity. In 1934 111, million tons of coal produced 16,100 million units. If the efficiency of production of electrical power had remained the came, the 111 million tons would only have produced 6400 millions units, or less than half the actual production.”
