ESPERANTO
MASTERTON CLUB MEETING. The Masterton Esperanto Club opened its 1939 season of weekly meetings last night, Mr A. Dewar, D.8.E.A., presiding over a good attendance of members in the Club Room, Municipal Buildings. After welcoming new members. Mr Dewar delivered a brief presidential address in which he outlined the operations of the club. The secretary-treasurer, Mr W. H. King, D.8.E.A., presented the annual report and balance-sheet for the past, year. The former document disclosed substantial activity and the latter indicated the club’s finances to be in a sound position. The report and bal-ance-sheet were adopted, the secretary being accorded a vote of thanks for his services. The election of officers which followed 'resulted: —Patrons, Y.M.C.A. Board of Directors and Mr J. Robertson. M.P.; president, Mr A. Dewar, D.B.E.A. (reelected); vice-president. Mrs J. McNab: secretary-treasurer and N.Z.E.A. delegate, Mr W. H. King. , In recognition of 10 years’ administrative service to the Esperanto movement in New Zealand, it was decided to make Mr King, ex-secretary of the New Zealand Esperanto Association, an honorary life member of the club. This is in conformity with similar action taken by the Esperanto clubs at Wellington, Miramar, Lower Hutt and Auckland. . Following the business session. Mr King briefly outlined the aims and claims of Esperanto and sketched the outstanding spread of the language throughout the world. Elementary and advanced classes were formed' under the guidance of Mr Dewar and Mr King, respectively, good progress being made by the students in their studies.
