MEETING OF MAURICEVILLE COUNCIL. TAR SEALING PROPOSALS. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Mauriceville County Council was held yesterday, Councillor E. W. Cheetham (chairman) presiding. Others present were: Councillors R. Judd, D. Bennett, A. Forsberg, A. Gray and C. Welch. The treasurer reported a debit balance of £854 3s sd, and accounts amounting to £403 12s 8d were passed. The Masterton County Council wrote in regard to royalties in respect of metal crushed at Opaki depot. The Clerk was directed to reply, approving the proposals submitted. Mr P. M. Tamatea requested permission to allow his drainage to flow into the road drain in front of his residence. This was granted on condition that he cleared the road drain and kept it clear.

The trustees of the estate of the late Mr George Mac Kay wrote requesting the assistance of the council for proposals for metalling part of the road into their Mangarai property. The matter’ was left in the hands of the chairman and Clerk to confer with Mr Cameron and the representative of the trustees as to what would be required in the first instance. The State Forest Service forwarded a schedule of accrued “fifths” amounting to £4 Is, which it was recommended be allocated to the maintenance of general country roads as hitherto. The chairman suggested that the Masterton County Council be requested to consider a proposal to exchange a piece of road intersecting on the Mauriceville main road for a piece of the southern end of the Wangaehu Road in the Mauriceville County, so that the question might be submitted for the consideration of the Main Highways Board. The council unanimously approved of the proposal. During the past month the chairman had arranged, with the approval of the District Engineer of the Main Highways Board, to have about 42 chains of Main Highway No. 443, through the Mauriceville town sealed. The work has been done and it is believed that it will prove to be an economic job. The Railway Department and the Dairy Company both took advantage of the opportunity to seal'their roadways in front of the station and the factory, which made a considerable improvement to their locality.

The chairman said that he thought it would be advisable to continue sealing on this road from the railway crossing to the junction with No. 87 Highway (Dreyer’s Rock Road). The council considered it an excellent proposal and the matter was left in the chairman’s hands to have specifications and plans prepared. The Clerk was directed to write Messrs C. E. Daniell, Ltd., in regard to some logs from Mangamahoe. The New Zealand Standards Institute forwarded proposals for town planning schemes and a proposed by-law for residential buildings. The council decided that it could make no comments on these matters at the present time. The overseer reported satisfactory progress of work during the past month and prospective work was discussed and arranged for.
