TEST MATCH AT WELLINGTON

NEW ZEALAND v CAHN'S tEAM. EXCITING CRICKET. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Five thousand spectators at the Basin Reserve, Wellington', yesterday enjoyed a day’s exciting cricket in the match between Sir Julien Cahn’s team and the New Zealand eleven, which was confined to one day's play because of rain on Friday and Saturday. By the irony of fate, yesterday was a perfect day, there being such brilliant sunshine that many of the spectators on the benches on the eastern side of the ground viewed play in their shirt, sleeves. The ground was in brilliant order but the ball was inclined to hang on the pitch instead of coming through to the bat and this made free scoring difficult. New Zealand had first use of the wicket and, thanks to bright batting by J. A. Ongley and resolute knocks by W. M. Wallace and W. N. Carson, both of whom were unbeaten, D. A. R. Moloney, the captain of the New Zealand side, was able sportingly to declare the innings closed at 2.50 p.m. with five wickets down for 170 runs. Though the Englishmen had plenty of time to score the necessary runs,. Cowie, Ashenden and Pritchard kept so good a length that runs came slowly and when stumps were drawn at 6 o’clock Sir Julien Cahn’s team were still seven runs short of the New Zealand total, the board showing 163 for the loss of seven wickets. The following were the scores:—
