AMIGO IN SPLENDID ORDER.

(By

"The Cynic.”)

Amigo is reported to be in good order for engagements at the Wellington meeting. Eastern Monarch. Eastern Monarch, the sire of El Golea, was got by Lemberg from Eastern Pearl, by Dinneford from Pearl Mosque, by St. Frusquin, the grandsire of Paper Money. Silver Scorn. Silver Scorn has a colt foal at foot to Royal Sun, and the youngster is said to be the best of this year’s lot at the Woodville stud. Clessamor Sold. Clessamor has been purchased by Mr A. Lile, of New Plymouth, and he will probably be put to jumping. Mr Lile formerly owned Omeo, Illuminate, Tigerism, and Royal Bengal, and made two visits to Riccarton with Omeo. Name Chosen. Defy is the name that has been claimed for the three-year-old halfsister by Defoe to Boughal in E. Burgess's Trentham stable. The filly, who is owned by Mr A. J. Taggart, of Petone, has been entered for one of the hack sprints at next week's Wellington meeting. Array of Talent. Such an array of three-year-old talent figures in the field that the Awapuni Gold Cup, to be contested at this month’s Manawatu meeting, should be one of the most interesting events of the racing year. Of the 13 entrants, eight are three-ybar-olds. Defaulter, of course, is missing, as he is "in Australia, but the rest of the junior elite are entered. Beaupartir (rated next to Defaulter), Gay Son, Amigo, Taurangi, Peerless, Homily, Old Bill, and Sudan are the three-year-olds engaged; and there is no need to write at length about the interest that will be taken in the race if they all hold their ground. The older horses are the crack four-year-olds, Royal Chief and Smoke Screen; the Thompson Handicap winner, Oratory; the Wellington Cup winner, Queen of Song; and the nine-year-old, Taranaki idol, Taitoru. Without doubt, it should be a race worth going, far to see.

Water Power’s Filly. / There should be a keen demand for the chestnut filly by Gustavo from Water Power when she goes into the ring at Trentham this week. Water Power, by Tractor from Charybdis, by Downshire from Whirlpool, by St. George from the Traducer mare Watersprite, was a good racehorse herself. Commencing racing, as a two-year-old, she was retired to the stud after having one start as an eight-year-old. During the other six seasons this mare started in 124 races, winning 19, was second in 17, and third in 14. Water Power was one of the best of Tractor’s progeny, and, as her racing record shows, a mare of cast-iron constitution. Her filly foal to be offered this week is an exceptionally well-grown youngster, and, like. all Gustavo’s stock, is built on stout lines.

A Special Purchase. Mr J. Morris, who purchased Drim in order to ride him in the next Liverpool Grand National, has some remarkable wagers about that horse. He has £l,OOO to.£l about the horse winning with himself as rider, £6,000 to £6O against completing the first circuit, and £5OO to £lO against his riding in the race and safely negotiating the first fence. The last bet appears the best of the lot. Drim was one of the 13 that finished last year. Camera Saved Him. Notwithstanding Santa Anita has five stewards superintending its racing, a recent cast showed that mistake was' possible on the part of such a strong numerical combination. A jockey named Shelhamer was suspended for crowding, but when, the following day, he produced films showing he was absolutely last when the trouble occurred, the stewards had to admit they were mistaken, and Shelhamer was reinstated. High Caste’s Half-brother. A yearling half-brother to High Caste, by Beau Pere from The Begum, is now located at R. S. Bagby's stable at Ellerslie. This youngster resembles his brother, Arvakur. both in colour and conformation. He is described as a rangy, well-grown colt. He is owned by his breeder, Mr A. J. McGovern, who recently sold High Caste for 7.000 guineas. RACING FIXTURES March 17, 18.—Wellington R.C. March 17, 18.—Ohinemuri J.C. March 18. —Waimate R.C. March 23, 25. —Oamaru J.C. March 24. 25.— Manawatu R.C. March 25. —Birchwood H.C. March 25, 27—Bay of Plenty R.C.

Full of Scotch. Much interest was taken in the effort of Full of Scotch in the Hurdles at Pukekohe, and he looked all right when he went out. He—was up with his field in the early part, then drifted a bit, but at the post he was not far away, finishing seventh. The find of last winter, Full of Scotch should soon be ready again for the jumping campaign. Galloped Well. Noitaro gave a very smooLi display of galloping when she won the hack seven furlongs at the Franklin meeting, for she was conceding weight to all her opponents, and she won in her own time. With 9.0 up this was a smart effort, and it indicates that she is back to her best. Surprise. The surprise of the Franklin Cup contest was the forward showing made by Grand City.. He was up with the leader, Galilee, making the home turn, and when she ran wide he had to go with her. Despite this setback, which meant the loss of several lengths at a vital stage, he finished fourth. His next engagement may be in the Tauranga Cup a fortnight hence, and that event should see another smart effort produced. Erndale. ' The majority of backers were caught on the hop when Erndale le‘d the sprinters home at Pukekohe, for the track was hard and fast, and in the past this galloper had been at his best under vastly different turf conditions, in addition .to which he is from the same family as those proved mudlarks White Comet, Paddon and Chang. On easier tracks Erndale will be hard to head off in any company. Jumping Season. The jumping season proper is usually considered as beginning at the Egmont meeting at Hawera early in May. Therefore, it is pleasing to note that there may not be a dearth of jumpers, if one can judge on the entries for the Ohinemuri fixture. The hurdles the first day has drawn no fewer than 33 entrants, and the steeplechase, always a popular institution at Paeroa, has 16 entrants, including the Awapuni representatives, Riotous eyid Hanover, and Don Erma from Taranaki. Two steeplechases at Ellerslie at Easter will leave the way clear for the opening of the jumping season in earnest. WAIMATE RACES ACCEPTANCES FOR SATURDAY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.)
