INTER-HOUSE SPORTS

GREAT DISPLAY AT PARK ATHLETIC & DRILL , COMPETITIONS EXCELLENT STANDARDS SET. Though announced during the morning as “on,” actually it was not until some time after the appoointed starting hour that it was finally determined to proceed with the Inter-House Sports on Saturday afternoon. Considering the state of the weather, the attendance of the public very good and every event other than the Girls’ Bicycle Rpce was held.

The main attraction was the Girls’ Drill and Marching competition. Eleven teams all in attractive uniforms, competed. To music by the Masterton Municipal Band, this section of the programme was opened by a grand march of all the teams, headed by team leaders carrying banners of the house represented. Then followed the individual marching efforts and in the same order every team .performed the physical drill routine ending with a massed drill display under Sergeant-Major C. E. Rogers, N.Z.P.S., who marshalled the teams in the competition section. At the conclusion of the drill section, Sergeant-Major G. P. O’Leary, N.Z.P.S., of Wellington, who was the principal judge, commented briefly through the loud-speaker system on the work of the girls. He was surprised at the high standard 'shown and considered that the first four teams would be equal to the best team in Wellington or the proposed inter-pro-vincial competition during the centennial celebrations in Wellington next year. He thought that a representative team from the Wairarapa Inter-House Association would do extremely well. At the end of the day the prizes for the individual events were presented by Mr L. B. Maunsell, president of the Inter-House Association who congratulated the prize-winners on thp success of their efforts and all competitors on the enthusiastic manner in which they supported the meeting. The judges for the marching and drill competitions were instructors from the Army School at Trentham who came to Masterton specially for the purpose of judging. The chief judge was W.0.l (S.S.M) G. P. O’Leary, N.Z.P.S. who decided the 'points for the best turnedout team and for the best leader. He was assisted in the drill sections by Sergeant B. Haycock, N.Z.P.S., and Sergeant C. Prentice, N.Z.P.S. The Drill and 'Marching Competitions were won by Hugo and Shearer’s team capably led by Miss G. Bacon who Won the prize for the best leader. The ’ members of the winning team were: Misses G. Bacon, M. Andrews, B. Vincent, N. Dixon, R. Bruce, N. Fulton, O. Smith, G. White and E. Waters. The coach was Mr J. A. Kennedy.

The girls’ 440yds Bicycle race was held oyer because of the state of the ground until Wednesday, when it will be held in conjunction with the evening meeting of the Masterton Amateur Athletic Club. SUCCESSFUL DANCE MUNICIPAL HALL PACKED. PRESENTATION OF TROPHIES. The Municipal Hall was packed for the dance on Saturday night to wind up the Inter-House activities for the day. To music supplied by the Blue River Dance Band, happy couples thronged the floor,; the uniforms of the girls who competed in the major events adding a colourful touch of distinction. One of the features of the evening was the massed parade of girls’ teams for the presentation of the principal trophies. They marched the length of the hall and stood before the platform while the cups were presented by Mrs L. B. Maunsell, wife of the president of the Inter-House Association.

Mr G. Daubney, chairman of the executive, congratulated the girls on the splendid display given that afternoon. He referred to the intensive practice for the competitions many of the teams starting as early as 6 a.m. and others training till late at night. He thanked the judges who had come from Trentham Military Camp specially for the

event and made particular reference to the work of Sergeant-Major C. E. Rogers, without whose specialised asistance and generous advice the display could never have 'been held. To the committee, too, Mr Daubney expressed his personal thanks for every member had worked tirelessly and ungrudgingly in the interests of the Association. At his call cheers were given for the prize-winners and for SergeantMajor Rogers. The crowd then replied with further cheers for the chairman Mr Daubney also referred to the splendid work done by the sub-com-mittee in charge of the athletic programme, Messrs J.. Hayden and D. Costello who bore the brunt of the work for the afternoon’s events.

The following trophies were presented by Mrs Maunsell: Teams Competition (drill and marching): Ist—Challenge Cup presented by A. and P. Association and a miniature cup for every member of the team' Hugo and Second: Challenge Cup presented by the “Times-Age”: W.F.C.A.
