FEATHERSTON
MAGISTRATE’S COURT SITTING. SEVERAL. POLICE CASES HEARD. ("Times-Age” Special.) At a-sitting of the Featherston Magistrate’s Court this week, over which Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M., presided, H. W. Abbott was charged with driving a motor car through Featherston ( at a greater speed than 30 miles per hour. A fine of £l, with costs 10s, was imposed. , The Transport Department (Traffic Inspector C. S. Nicholson) proceeded against James L. Lawson for exceeding a speed of 30 miles per hour in Featherston; also for not having a warrant of fitness. A fine of £2, with costs 12s, was imposed on the first charge and a fine of £l, with costs 10s, on the second charge. The Featherston Borough Council proceeded against Josiah Towersey for using water from a house contrary to the by-laws. Towersey, who did not appear, was fined £l, with costs 10s, and solicitor’s fee 10s 6d. On a further charge of leaving a load of wood, obstructing a street in the borough he was fined £2, costs 10s, and solicitor’s fee 10s 6d. C. F. Murphy was fined £2 and costs 10s for driving at a speed exceeding 30 miles per hour in Featherston. As the result of a collision between two cars on the Mt Bruce Road on January 4, the police proceeded against William Bee on a charge of driving in a manner dangerous to the public. The prosecution was conducted by Constable McLeod and defendant was represented by Mr Wilson. The Magistrate stated that the speed of defendant’s car was' such as to be dangerous. There had been a fatal accident at the same place. Defendant was definitely on his wrong side and his speed was dangerous, even if there had been no other car there. It was one of the worst cases he had heard of for several months. Defendant was fined £5, with costs 19s, and witnesses’ expenses £4 2s 6d. Defendant’s licence was suspended for two months, but the suspension was dated from March 9, to enable defendant to drive his car home. There was no suspicion of drink in the case.
