THIS MORNING’S MEETING OF COUNCIL UPKEEP OF MARTINBOROUGH CEMETERY. CONTRIBUTION ON 50-50 BASIS. ("Times-Age” Special.) The chairman, Mr A. B. Martin, presided at the monthly meeting of the Featherston County Council held at Martinborough today. Others present were Councillors R. W. Matthews, L. J. Thompson, G. J. Gillies, I. McLeod, Q. Donald, J. C. Bidwill, D. Cameron and R. Smith. The chairman reported that the Martinborough Borough Council had agreed to contribute on a fifty-fifty basis' towards the cost of the upkeep of the Martinborough Cemetery, with a maximum annual payment of £5O. Mr Martin said he did not anticipate that the annual upkeep would exceed £lOO. He. thought they were on safe grounds and that they had made a good contract. A letter was received from the Transport Department asking if the council considered it desirable that further restrictions should be imposed on the use of motor-cycles. After a brief discussion the council unanimously decided that it was its considered opinion that the law be left as at present and that no further restrictions be imposed. The Public Works Department is to be advised that the council had received no complaints regarding the design or construction of cattle stops erected in the country. The only question that could possibly arise was that of cost. , The Minister of Internal Affairs wrote thanking the council for its co-operation in the organisation oi Keep Fit Week. The State Advances Corporation forwarded application forms in respect of the proposed loan for the erection of a workman’s cottage .in the county. The Clerk, Mr H. Harding, said that the plans had been submitted to the Public Works Department for approval. ' , The Transport Department wrote stating that the police report, of a fatal accident at Whangamoana on January 20 suggested that loose metal on the road might' have been one of the contributing causes of the accident. It was suggested that the council might consider some action necessary in the interests of road safety. The council considered that the road was in good order and the letter was received. • ■, It was reported that 97.7 per cent of the rates for the current year were collected at penalty date as compared with 96.6 for 1937-38. The total rates levied amount to £30,367 12s 5d and after allowing for discount the total collections amounted to £29,694 17s Bd, leaving £672 14s 2d outstanding. Mr J. G. Mahood, County Overseer, wrote thanking the council for the kindness shown him during his, recent illness, which he greatly appreciated. Mr Martin said he was pleased that Mr Mahood had made a good recovery and he hoped that he would be able to carry on for many years. The ranger reported having dealt with 14 head of stock and "having registered 284 dogs during the month. Fees collected amounted to £46 6s 6,d.
