WOMEN’S INSTITUTE ANNUAL MEETING. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. ("Times-Age” Special.) The fourth annual meeting of the Kopuaranga Women’s Institute was held in the hall yesterday, Mrs S. J. Clarke presiding. The annual report was adopted. The election of officers resulted as follows: —President Mrs E. J. Wright; vice-presidents, Mesdames A. B. Cottle, A. Donald and C. P. Jarrett; committee, Mesdames S. J. Clarke, A. B. Cottle, W. J. Cottle, E. C. Cottle, R. Kenny, A. -Donald, C. P. Jarrett and W. Reside; secretary, Mrs W. J. Cottle; treasurer, Mrs R. Kenny; press correspondent, Miss M. Wright; Home and Country agent, Miss L. Fenemor; auditor, Mr A. Donald; delegates to council meeting on April 19, Mesdames E. J. Wright and S. J. Clarke. It was decided to hold a bring and buy stall at the April meeting. The competitions for April will be apple jelly, and guest towel from i’yd of white towelling. Mrs Keir and Mrs Shaw (KaitunaFernridge) gave a demonstration on smocked aprons. Votes of thanks were passed to the Press and to Mesdames Keir, McKay and Shaw. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames E. J. Wright, A. B. Cottle and R. Moon. FOURTH BIRTHDAY. The members of the . Kopuaranga Women’s Institute celebrated their fourth birthday by holding a concert and dance on Tuesday evening. Birthday greetings were received from all institutes in the Federation and visitors were present from Kahautara, Hastwell and Mauriceville institutes. The items were a pianoforte solo by Miss Jarrett; two operatic dances by Miss Gwen Cottle; short poi dance by Misses- E. Pura and P. Karaitiana; long poi by Miss E. Pura (pianist MrsReside); darky songs by Mesdames Clarke, Jarrett, Kenny and Miss Jarrett (pianist Mrs Donald); play, "A Quiet Evening,” cast, Mr Reynolds. Mrs Jarrett; Mrs Reynolds, Miss M. Wright; Sybil and Hazel (daughter), Misses R. and N. Westhead; Mary, the maid, Miss E. Jarrett; Mrs Stevens, Mrs Kenny. Trophies won during the year were presented to Mrs Jarrett (institute aggregate points prize); Miss E. Jarrett (junior aggregate points prize, donated by Mrs A. B. Cottle); best bloom (Mrs W. J. Cottle’s trophy) Mrs Kenny; cooking (Mrs Kenny’s trophy), Miss M. Kenny; and most entries in cooking (Mrs Kenny’s trophy), Mrs Donald and Mrs Clarke. .The birthday. cake was made and iced by Mrs Kenny for- the institute. The president, Mrs Clarke, lit the candles and Mrs Wright extinguished them. The cake was cut by Mrs P. R. Welch, after wishing the Kopuaranga Women’s Institute many more happy birthdays. Dancing was continued till midnight, when a happy birthday was brought to a close by singing “Auld Lang Syne” and the National Anthem.
Cablegrams read to the Methodist Church conference in Christchurch stated that sharp earthquakes experienced in the Solomon Islands at the end of January had caused damage amounting to £5OO at the head station of the Methodist Church Mission there. Other minor damage was reported by missionaries, but all workers were said to be safe.
