FEATHERSTON

A FAREWELL GATHERING. MR AND MRS. B. ASHER LEAVING THE DISTRICT. (“Times-Age” Special.) There was a large gathering of settlers and visitors, including several pioneers settlers at the Pihautea Hall on Wednesday evening to farewell Mr and Mrs R. Asher. Mr Asher has disposed of his farm and is going to live in Wellington. The time was spent in dancing. Shortly before supper, Mr. Bargh wished Mr Asher luck and happiness and regretted the loss of such a splendid helper. He asked Mr and Mrs Asher to accept a dinner service, a set of carvers and a travelling rug from their many friends at Pihautea. Mr. Playle, chairman of the School Committee, spoke of the work Mr Asher had done during his 12 years as a committee man and asked him to accept a shaving outfit. Mr Asher said he and Mrs Asher regretted saying good-bye and thanked the settlers for their gifts and good wishes. Supper was handed round and dancing continued. The evening concluded with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.” Ladies’ Guild. The Kahautara-Pihautea-Kaiwaiwai Ladies’ Guild held its opening meeting on Tuesday at the home of the president, Mrs J. Carne Bidwill. The speaker for the afternoon was Mrs Cleghorn, Masterton, who gave an interesting talk on “Czechoslovakia.” Mrs. Bidwill entertained all at afternoon tea. Drought Broken. After a long spell of dry weather a drizzling rain commenced early yesterday morning and continued throughout the day, becoming heavier towards evening. Property owners greatly appreciate the rain, as owing to the shortage of water and the risk of fires, a lot of anxiety will now be alleviated. Personal. Mrs Phil Bennett, of New Plymouth, who has been staying with her aunt, Mrs C. Elgar, “Fernside,”-returned to her home yesterday. Miss G. Browne is visiting her sister Mrs P. R. Galbraith, Christchurch. Mrs A. McKay, Pihautea, has returned from visiting her mother, Mrs A. McGovern, Masterton. Mrs McNabb, Wellington, is visiting Mrs P. Sullivan, Kahautara Road.
