MARTINBOROUGH

SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING. DRAINING OF PLAYGROUND. (“Times-Age” Special.) At the last monthly meeting of the Martinborough School Committee the Wellington Education Board advised that no subsidy towards the cost of a duplicator could be granted. The board approved the cost of repairs to the building and requested the committee to put same in hand. The headmaster reported the attendances for the month as follow: Primary roll 198, average 181.4; secondary 42 and 40.1. The picnic was a success and thanks were due to those who had helped. There was a credit balance of £2 7s lOd. The action of the secretary in taking out an insurance cdver for children attending the picnic was approved. It was decided to send a letter to Mr Tilson thanking him for the use of the picnic ground. Accounts amounting to £l9 13s 6d was passed. The visiting committee reported that the draining of the playground had been started. Mr Lawrence was appointed visitor for the month. As by the Education Act it was decided to call applications for a caretaker, the headmaster and chairman to revise the schedule of duties. Garden Circle. The annual meeting of the Garden Circle was held at Mrs Dale’s residence with a good attendance of members. Mrs Tyler was re-elected Leader and Mrs McAlphine secretary. Mrs Tyler was presented with some very pretty pieces of pottery,, which were donated by Mrs Hamilton for the winner of most prizes in competitions for the best flower in the garden. It Was decided to have a competition for flowering shrubs each month in addition to one for the best flower. Mrs Cherryman gave some very good hints on the growing of chrysanthemums, but was unable to demonstrate disbudding, as the plants available were too backward. The winners of the competition were Mrs Tyler 1, and Mrs Cotter 2 and 3. Personal. The Misses Campbell, of Messrs Pain & Kershaw’s staff,. are spending their annual holiday in Christchurch. Mrs Les. Campbell and her two small daughters are spending three months in the South Island during Mr Campbell’s absence in America.
