MANY ATTRACTIONS
BEAUTIFYING SOCIETYW.M.CX CARNIVAL OPENING EVENT TOMORROW. NEXT WEEK’S PROGRAMME. The big carnival being sponsored by the Masterton Beautifying Society and the Y.M.C.A. will open tomorrow night with the presentation of the "Debutantes’ Revue” in the Opera House and will continue next week with many attractive features, culminating on Saturday, March 18 with a spectacular display, both afternoon and evening, in the Park. The “Debutantes’ Revue” promises to provide a splendid evening’s entertainment. Leading local talent will present a number of bright items and some idea of the magnitude of the production may be gained from the fact that about 120 are taking part in it. The music will include many popular melodies, and the lighting, dressing and scenery will be of a high standard. Artistic dancing, many humorous sketches, Maori singing, dancing and hakas, conjuring, vocal solos, national dancing and many other attractive items figure on the programme. The revue will be presented, besides tomorrow night, on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday next. Next Tuesday an inter-house table tennis tournament will be held in the Y.M.C.A. Halls. At least 14 teams will be taking part, probably many more and the contest should prove a most enjoyable one. Twelve tables will be available. Special arrangements have been made to cater for all classes of players. Individual trophies will be awarded to the players of the winning team. The tourney will commence at 7.30 p.m. and supper will be available for a small extra charge. A popular dance will be the attraction on Thursday night in the Municipal Hall. The Blue River Dance Band will provide the music. On Friday night a cabaret in the Municipal Hall no doubt will attract a large attendance of. patrons. A full orchestra - has been engaged for the occasion—Jack Mac Kay’s Novelty Syncopators. . , , The grand finale of the carnival week will take place at the Park on Saturday afternoon and evening (March 18). In the afternoon a big programme has been arranged, to commence at 1.30 p.m. There will be athletic events and spectacular displays of marching by massed school children, Scouts and others. In the evening starting at 7 o’clock, a trapeze and Roman rings display will be given by the Y.M.C.A. gymnastic squad and there will be a good fireworks display. Both afternoon and evening there will be a full range of stalls laden with cakes, produce, including bottled preserves, jams, sauces and cream (own containers should be brought); flowers, sweets, miscellaneous goods, etc., and there will also be a jumble stall, left parcel stall, bran tub and other attractions. A big array of sideshows comprising flying balls, roll downs, knock downs, topsy turvey, archery, rifle range, nail driving, hoopla, coconut shy, darts, mickey mouse, etc., will prove popular ( with the public. Boats will be available for hire and there will be a sheep weight guessing competition. Badges will be on sale at a cost of Is each today, and on Wednesday. Friday and Saturday of next week.
