YELLOWKNIFE
DEVELOPMENT OF MINING TOWN. EDMONTON. As an indication of the striking development of a mining district, the town of Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories, 800 miles north of here, is possibly the most outstanding recent example. Discovery of gold there four years ago has resulted in the registering of approximately 5,500 claims of which 3,500 were filed during 1938. Two gold milling plants have been erected, a thriving settlement of more than 1000 people has sprung up and the town site now contains 40 buildings including a government radio station. Location of this thriving mining town of the northland is proving of exceptional value to the development of other mining areas in that vicinity. As an instance, one of the gold milling -plants recently received a shipment by aeroplane of one ton of ore from one of the claims in the hinterland.
