SURRENDER OF ARMY CHIEFS IN MADRID STRONG FORCES BROUGHT INTO CITY. COMMUNIST BARRICADES. PIERCED. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyrigtit. (Received This Day, 10.0 a.m.) MADRID, March 8. It is officially stated that the army chiefs who revolted have surrendered. At the height of the revolt, a pitched battle occurred at Calle de Alcala. Three divisions from the Guadalajara were rushed up in lorries at dawn and pierced the Communist barricades, forcing a surrender. These Communists included companies from the Jarama front, who left the lines to come to Madrid in order to help their comrades. A revolting battalion was forced to surrender, after a tank attack on the Madrid racecourse. Planes machinegunned and bombed Communists behind street barricades, while field guns shelled buildings where other groups were sheltering. REPORT FROM LISBON. WHITE FLAG HOISTED. (Received This Day, 10 a.m.) LISBON, March 8. A broadcast from Madrid stated that the Communists have hoisted the white flag and the revolt is over,' except at Ciudadreal. EARLIER NEWS COMMUNIST BID FOR POWER. GENERAL FRANCO ADVISED BY SPIES. LONDON, March 8. Silent since last night, the Madrid wireless station this morning announced the supression of the Cartagena revolt including an attempt by supporters of the former Premier, Dr Negrin, to seize the arsenal. The Communists in Madrid are reported to have erected barriers across the main road to Cuenca and to be holding up munition lorries on their way to the City. They seized artillery from a vital defence position. Colonel Casado has listed 60 Communist leaders to be shot. Supporters of Dr Negrin say that the Cabinet fled when it was learned that Colonel Casado had planned to courtmartial and execute Dr Negrin, Senor del Vayo, former Foreign Minister, and others on a charge of betraying Spain to the Communists. General Franco’s spies overnight, hourly advised him of the position in Madrid. General Franco is ready for a tank and artillery attack if the Communists overcome Colonel Casado, against whom five battalions of Communists are reported to be holding out. DUKE ,OF ALBA.
