CENTENNIAL STAMPS
SPECIAL COMMEMORATION ISSUE. EVENTS IN NEW ZEALAND HISTORY. Work on the preparation of the Centennial stamp issue is nearing completion, according to a statement made yesterday by the Postmaster-General, the Hon. F. Jones. The designs have all proved satisfactory for engraving reproduction and the work of printing has begun. The subjects featured and the denominations which will be issued are: (1) The landing of the Maoris; the main migration of about 1350 —id denomination. (2) A Maori council, representing Maori institutions and the importance of Maori contributions to Polynesian culture —7d denomination. (3) Tasman’s discovery of New Zealand, 1642—2 d denomination. , (4) Captain James Cook’s rediscovery of New Zealand, 1769 —Id denomination. : (5) The landing of the New Zealand Company’s immigrants on Petone beach, January 22, 1840—3 d denomination. •. (6) The Treaty of Waitangi, 1840— 2|d denomination. ' (7) The hoisting of the British flag at Akaroa, August .11, 1840—5 d denomination. i (8) The period of goldmining (1862) and the development of the industry—--9d denomination. (9) The first overseas shipment of frozen mutton from Port Chalmers, February 15, 1882—6 d denomination. (Featuring the sailing ship Dunedin). (10) The progress of transport in New Zealand—4d denomination. ■ (11) One hundred years of New Zealand history under the British Crown —ljd denomination. i (12) The giant kauri—Tane Mahuta, symbolising the whole period of New Zealand history—ls denomination. The subjects were selected after careful consideration as- representing salient points in New Zealand’s historical and industrial development arid embrace in the limited Scope of a set of 12 stamps all aspects of the remarkably full history the Dominion possess(jS. “The issue,” said Mr Jones, “will be one of the finest the Dominion has produced. The designs chosen are excellent and the engraving treatment is very satisfactory. The set is of a staridard appropriate to mark the national importance of the celebrations we will be holding next year.” The stamps will be placed on sale at all post offices on January 2, 1940, and’’Will remain on sale during the whole period of the national celebrations. .
