. » — OPENING OF (DEMONSTRATIONS AT WANGANUI. A SPECTACULAR DISPLAY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WANGANUI, March 7. The opening performance of the United Fire Brigades of New Zealand conference and demonstrations in Wanganui was witnessed by nearly 3000 at Cook’s Gardens tonight. A spectacular display on the sportsground was lit by 50,000 candle-power electric lights mounted on four permanent steel towers. The Highland and Garrison Bands and the Wanganui Amateur Athletic Club combined to stage a big display, features of th,e evening being the activities of the Darktown Fire Brigade, a drum-major’s display by the Wanganui Highland Pipe Band and cycling and athletic events. The four-men motor event, coiled hose, dry drill, "resulted:—'Hojtitika, 27se.es., 1; Upper' Hutt and Petprie, 28secs. (tie), 2; Hawera. 29secs„ 3; Stratford, 29 2-5 secs., 4;’ Carterton, 30secs., .5 Thirty-one teams competed.
