HOPES OF RECOVERY
- —■» FRENCH FINANCE MINISTER’S SURVEY BETTER PROSPECTS OF PEACE, APPEAL TO PEOPLE TO STAND TOGETHER. By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright. PARIS, March 6. The Finance Minister, M. Reynaud, addressing retail traders today, appealed to the people of France to stand together and expedite the growing financial recovery. He added that business would rapidly revive immediately foreign threats were removed. Herr Hitler had said that he would not fight for colonies. Everyone realised that redivision of colonial possessions would not solve Europe’s problems. The chances of peace were stronger because the democratic nations were collaborating to save Europe, for war profited nobody. France’s stocks of gold were increasing daily. France, as in England, would henceforward publish a monthly, statement showing the operation of the Exchange Equalisation Fund. The franc was Europe’s refuge amid the international storm. The stabilisation fund possessed 10 times more gold than at March 1, 1937. Money was returning to the savings banks, unemployment was falling, building permits and automobile sales were increasing, and the .production of steel and textiles was rising. M. Reynaud pledged himself to a campaign of economies.
