“THAT IS DEMOCRACY”
MEDAL FOR PRESIDENT ROOSEVELT RECOGNITION OF EFFORTS FOR REFUGEES. “BROTHERHOOD OF JEWS & CHRISTIANS.” By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. WASHINGTON, March 6. General Johnson, former N.R.A. administrater, presenting President Roosevelt with a medal awarded him by a committee of distinguished Jews. Protestants and Catholics for his efforts to promote understanding between Jews and Christians, drew attention to the fact that the committee comprised citizens, many of whom were politically opposed to the President, yet who were united in their tribute.
“Mr President,” said General Johnson, “that is democracy, of which you are the most distinguished champiol* in this dangerous world. If trouble comes, the world may know from this how your country will unite to support you. That is, I think, the true meaning of this medal.” President Roosevelt,' replying, appealed for a brotherhood of Jews and Christians in the spirit of “our common- Biblical heritage.”
