TEMPERANCE UNION

BUSINESS AT MONTHLY MEETING. PADDY’S MARKET TO BE HELD. The monthly meeting of the Masterton W.C.T.U. was held this week in the Methodist classroom. Miss Tankersley presided over a fair attendance of members. After routine business the remits for the annual convention this month were read and discussed. An enjoyable afternoon tea was served by the - hostesses, Mesdames Cocker, Willoughby' and Sims. The Temperance Fact was presented by Mrs Jansen as follows:—“The effect of alcohol is to paralyse the judgment and that paralysis begins with the first glass.” It was decided to hold a Paddy’s Market on Wednesday, April 19. More detailed arrangements are to be made at the April meeting. The president called on Mrs Cockter to close the meeting with the Benediction. HOME MEETING. A pleasant home meeting of the Masterton branch of the W.C.T.U., held recently at the home of Mrs H. Speight, Johnston Street, w.as well attended. After the opening devotions Mrs Carstens rendered two very pleasing solos. Two readings on ’the life and work of Frances Willard, the founder of the W.C.T.U., were given by Miss Tankersley (president) and Mrs Kitchener. Afternoon tea was much enjoyed by all present, 'after which a knitting competition was held. This caused much amusement. Votes of thanks to the hostess and soloist concluded a delightful afternoon.
