ACCIDENT ON RIMUTAKA ROAD.
MOTOR-CYCLIST AND PILLION RIDER SLIGHTLY INJURED. a
(“Times-Age” Special.) A motor accident occurred on the Rimutaka Hill Road early yesterday afternoon. The parties concerned were two young men riding a motor cycle to Wellington and Mr and Mrs • /,E. H. Hawker, who were returning to from a holiday at Paraparaumu. When approaching the top / cf the hill on his right side of the road Mr Hawker was unfortunate in catchmg a wheel of the motor cycle, which ‘•“ was rounding the top of the hill. Mr Hawker, who was travelling slowly, caught the cycle with his right-hand side front wheel, and pulled up immediately. Both the driver of the cycle and the pillion rider were slightly injured. The cycle did not. suffer much damage. ODDFELLOWSHIP. BUSINESS AT ANNUAL CONFERENCE. The annual District Conference of the Manchester Unity Order of Oddfellows was held in Wellington on Saturday and was attended by thirty delegates from the seventeen lodges in the Wellington district. The G.M., Sister McFarlane, the first lady member to attain that honour in the district, presided and carried out her duties in a very efficient manner. • < : The election of officers resulted as under: —District G.M., Bro G. W. Craddock; D.D.G.M., Bro A. J. Foote; district management committee, Bros R, Baikie (Masterton), R. Farrow (Eke-tahuna),'W.'P.-Holt, T. H. Norris, R. Wickens, W. R. Treadwell; examining and delivering officer, Bro C. H. Hicks; district book-examiner-auditor, Bro F. A. Davis; assistant district auditor, Bro J. W. Russell; district treasurer, Bro J. L. Stewart;, arbitration committee, Bros C. J. De Lacey, S. V. Gooding A. C. Blair, W. B. Brown, A. Bick and K. Cropp; delegates to M.C., Bros S. V. Gooding (Masterton), G. W. Craddock, W. B. Brown - and J. L. Stewart. It was resolved to hold the next District Conference in 1941 at Loyal Victoria Diamond Lodge, Levin. Wairarapa and Tararua Past Grand Lodges were given authority to confer purple and past officers’ degrees. Bro P. M. Smith’s (Masterton) Membership Shield was won by Loyal Mangataino’ka Lodge with Levin second and Rose of Shannon, Lower Hutt, third. . ' . The district levy on lodges for the year was fixed at 2s 6d for male members and Is 3d for female members. ■ > • .■ ‘ ' - Euchre Tourney. The first of a series of euchre tourneys and dances held under the auspices of the Clareville Hall Committee took place on Friday night. There was a very large attendance which augurs well for a successful season. The prizes for the cards resulted: — Ladies, Mrs F. Daysh 1, Mrs C. Meyrick 2; men, Mr C. Daysh 1, Mr Regan 2. The consolation prizes went to Mrs W. Abbott and Mrs Berney. Miss Boustead and Mr S. Fisher won the Monte Carlo waltz. The music for the dancing was played by Mrs Limmer and Mr J. Edwards, extras being played by Miss James and Mrs C. Blake. Supper was afterwards served. The duties of M.C. were in the capable hands of Messrs E. James and S. Fisher. An aggregate prize for cards will be awarded each month and one will also be awarded for the whole season’s play. 5 Clay Bird Shpoting. There was a large assemblage at the Martinborough clay bird shoot held at Martinborough during the weekend and members of the Carterton Club were among the prize-winners. The first match of 15 birds was won by R. Buick with a possible off the 18 yards mark. 8., Lipinski, shooting from 11 yards, was second with 14 breaks. A nine-bird match was won by Rex Walker of the Carterton Club who gained a possible number of kills. In the same match four tied for second place—Messrs Buick, Harris, McLeod and Moroney—and in the shootoff Harris was successful. Centennial Exhibition.. Members of the Wellington District Oddfellows, at the invitation of the Mayor of Wellington, • Mr T. C. A. Hislop, had the pleasure of going over the Centennial Exhibition buildings and grounds yesterday. The building space of the exhibition covers 14 acres of ground and the progress of building is 2| months ahead of schedule. At the moment good progress is being made with the New Zealand Court and when finished this portion of the *■ building will be a revelation. Your correspondent was informed that already accommodation is being fully booked up for the opening ceremony in November next. Personal. Bros S. V. Gooding, R. Baikie, C. J. De Lacey, G. S. Bruce, J. S. Viles, F. A. Davis, H. Bick and R. Farrow represented Wairarapa lodges at the Wellington District Conference of Oddfellows held in Wellington on Saturday. Mr A. J. King, who has been stationed at the Weber Post Office for some considerable time, has returned to Carterton and will again take up duties Mr and Mrs Clapcott, of Rexwood Street, who have been on holiday, have returned to Carterton.. Cricket, Playing against St. Patrick’s team at Carterton on Saturday, Carterton jun- ' iors maintained their unbeaten record by defeating St. Patrick’s Old Boys by 58 runs in a one innings game, at the Carterton Post. Office.
