MR GANDHI’S FAST. CHEERFUL THOUGH WEAK. By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright RAJKOT, March 4. After one day of his fast Mahatma Gandhi was cheerful though weak. A specialist, after an examination, saidthat he should be most careful not to receive visitors or conduct correspondence. Congress Ministers are hoping to end Mr Gandhi’s fast, and have telegraphed urging the Viceroy, Lord Linlithgow, to intervene. A message published on Friday stated that Gandhi threatened that, unless he received a satisfactory reply to a 24-hour ultimatum demanding constitutional reforms in Rajkot States, he would begin an indefinite fast at 6.30 a.m. on March 3. He demands that the people be given a voice, in the administration. STRENGTH MAINTAINED. RAJKOT, March 5. Mahatma Gandhi is extraordinarily cheerful and is maintaining his strength/though he appears to be thinner. Hindu Scriptures are being read to him during his fast. Mrs Gandhi, who is imprisoned seven miles away, is not .permitted to visit her husband. VISIT BY MRS. GANDHI. (Received This Day, 10.10 a.m.) RAJKOT. March 5. Mrs Gandhj was taken to her husband’s bedside and then returned to the detention camp. VICEROY CURTAILS TOUR. (Received This Day, 10.10 a.m.) NEW DELHI, March 5. The Viceroy, the Marquess of Linlithgow, has curtailed his tour of the Rajputna States,and is due at New Deihi tomorrow.
